my name's Alison the online violin and
the online piano cheater today I'm going
to be teaching you how to do vibrato on
the violin and before I before I get
into any of the exciting details into a
broto I just need to say that vibrato is
not an overnight thing for brazo is
something that will take months and
months and months to develop but if you
keep working on it one day it will click
and you will have it trust me it's not
an overnight thing it's not a week thing
or a two-week thing it will take a long
time to develop it will gradually get
better and better so to start with it

will sound rubbish and it won't sound
very good at all but you must stick with
it and you will get better and better so
let's get into it so I would normally
start teaching for brighto to my
students if they have a violin just
tucked onto their arm like this so the
violin was with side raises if you like
I always get them to start with their
middle finger or finger - if you want to
call it that because I think it's the
easy it's probably the easiest finger to
do vibrato on the second thing is easier
to do probably the easiest then maybe
the first thick finger followed closely

by the third finger and then the fourth
fingers normally the most difficult one
to do I normally recommend that you
don't probably spend too much time doing
vibrato on the fourth finger it's one of
those things that will come when you've
got a little brighter on the rest of the
hands the fourth finger will just kind
of follow follow suit if you like so
starting anywhere on any string I've
just got my second finger on the a
string here it doesn't really matter now
what you're trying to do it basically is
to roll your finger from one side of
your fingernail to the other side of

your fingernail so you're going to be
rolling from one side of the fingernail
to the other side of the fingernail just
concentrate on rolling from one side of
the nail to the other side of the nail
don't try and make don't try and move
your wrist or your
fingers or anything just concentrate on
rolling your your finger that's on the
string from one side to the other and
that is the movement that you're going
to be making vibrato with just rolling
from from one side of the nail to the
other it's obviously going to go going
to be a lot faster than this but this is

the actual movement don't we don't want
you doing any other movements or
anything other than that or trying to do
finger vibrato which is people trying to
push the finger up and down all the
strings that's not true vibrato you want
to roll from one side of the fingernail
to the other so that's the movement I
normally suggest people do just so they
can physically see it and get the hang
of it so rolling from one side to the
other when you actually put the violin
up you're still going to be doing
exactly the same thing you're still
going to be rolling from one side or

trying to roll from one side of the
fingernail to the other now that might
be a little bit different just simply
because your finger is at a slightly
different angle so my hand isn't round
as far as it was when the violin was
down here because I can't possibly reach
I can't reach around as much because of
where the violin is now onto my chin but
I'm still rolling from one side of the
fingernail to the other so I'm still
trying to roll from one side to the
other so almost like I'm rolling and
maybe a little bit diagonally but it
must be rolling one side of the

I I'm doing that the fingers the rest of
these fingers up here
are kind of moving along for the ride as
well and the movement is coming from the
wrist but I don't kind of like to dwell
on that too much because then when
people say oh is it going from the wrist
they want to move their wrist and it's
or move their fingers and it's too much
it's not going to work you must just
concentrate all the power is almost at
the tip of your finger where your finger
is actually touching the string if you
like it's very difficult it's very

difficult to explain and people find
broto so difficult but I think to be
honest with you people find vibrato so
difficult because they can't do it
straight away
they get really frustrated and annoyed
with their are can't do it sounds
rubbish and then they give up on it and
they won't do it but if it's going to
take months and months to develop you
must start those months and months and
months of training at some point the
more you put it off you know the further
away you're going to get to the goal
because it's still good if it's going to

take you for example six months and I
don't know how to get the hang of a bra
toe and you started that in January by
saying June you're going to have got it
but if you start in January give up
because it doesn't sound rubbish and
then you don't start until the following
Christmas then you know you've put
yourself back a year or so because it's
going to take that amount of months to
go for it so this would be the sort of
Sam that I would expect to be coming
from a student who's first having a go
at this
it almost sounds like a like a wailing
eye or a siren or something it is
supposed to sound like that because
you've not got the uniqueness of the
movement and and you've not been able to
you know or you know you've not had as
many years experiences as I have for
example doing broto it will sound a
little bit odd in a little bit weird but
you must learn to break through that
wall if you like so yes it will sound
horrible to start with but any
opportunity when you're applying music
and you've got a long note that you can
hold just go for it and try the vibrato
because every little every little bit of
vibrato is always constantly pushing
forward and helping you break through
the wall so that you can get the hang of
a broto
eventually one day you'll be able to get
faster and then what you'll probably
find is that you'll be able to get it
going fast but then you'll you'll stop
you won't be able to get a whole stream
of it or you'll find that you might not
be able to get the continuity so yeah
and then that will sort of be it then
your hand won't work anymore and then
you'll sort of do it again but then you
know those intervals will get longer and
longer to the point where we are able to
do for broto
a lot longer more fluently and more
consistently so if I bring just bring my
hand up closer to the camera and do
vibrato as it should be so that you can
see the final results that might help to
uncover exactly what's what's kind of
going on in in my hands so it's not very
often that you can see kind of close up
for Bratt
so when you get a little bit more
experienced you will be able to vary the
speed of the vibrato as well and that
will just give you an just it'll just
give you different amounts of expression
to use when you're applying certain
pieces we've been playing slow pieces
it's really nice to build intensity by
using a lot of a barato and the brat
who's moving quite fast as well if
you're coming towards the end of a slow
piece for example it's really nice to
slow down the vibrato so the piece kind
of you help the piece to tail off
Neronian dynamics or volume but in the
vibrato as well it all brings it to kind
of a nice grinding hole bed so that's
for broto i don't think is anything much
else that I can actually say about
vibrato as long as you are moving your
fingernail concentrating moving your
fingernail from one side of the string
to the other side or one side of the
nail to the other side of the nail then
you should be on the right track don't
think about your fingers don't think
about your wrist don't think about your
arm don't think of anything of that just
think about moving from one side of the
fingernail to the other and the rest of
the hands and the wrists and all that
kind of stuff we'll just go with it you
need to be need to be flexible so you
know what I'm saying is that that you
don't want to sort of have your hand
rigidly there so you know nothing's
moving because you're not letting it
move just relax your hand so that
everything can move freely and then just
concentrate on rolling from one side of
the fingernail to the other it might
help if you just held the violin like
this just so that you could see the
movement and then when you did put it up
under your chin you should be able to
carry on that movement as well but when
I teach my students vibrato I normally
find that this is a really good way of
teaching it and after a few months of
practice and just trying it whenever
possible they're really pleased with it
and it sounds really good but it will
take ages to develop so start now and
and then you know a few months later or
so then you'll be really keys are there
and I clicked into place penny when it
dropped and you will be a master of
