How To Annotate A Poem Video Transcript
tonight you're going to annotate a poemi hear america singing so before you go
to annotate it i thought i'd teach you
how to annotate upon so that you can use
it in your paper first because you're
going to use i hear america singing in
your paper so i'm going to teach you how
to do it on another poem that would work
in your essay for the great gatsby as
well so step one is to read the poem out
loud so here it goes not like the brazen
giant of Greek fame with conquering
limbs astride from land to land here at
our sea-washed sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch his flame is
the imprisoned lightning and her name
mother of exiles from her beacon hand
glows worldwide welcome her mild eyes
command the air bridge harbor that Twin
Cities frame keep ancient lands your
storied pomp cry she was silent limbs
give me your tired your poor your
huddled masses yearning to breathe free
the refuse the wretched refuse of your
teeming Shore send these the homeless
tempest-tossed I lift my lamp beside the
Golden Door well Emma Lazarus is
speaking about the Statue of Liberty in
New York's famed Harbor a very Statue of
Liberty that great that the great gatsby
that Nick and Tom and Daisy all would
have seen in their adventures to New
York so as you're reading it I want you
to look for anything that have could
have to do with the great gatsby the
American dream or the good Thorstein
Veblen so look at this mother of exiles
when I think of mother of exiles I'm
going to highlight that when i think of
mother of exiles i think of someone like
gatsby so i would come over here and
we're and right make that read and i
would write this makes me think of
Gatsby
when I come down here I would highlight
this right here and think wow that
really makes me think of Thorstein
Veblen because right here you really see
this idea of Veblen the America and the
American Dream the American Dream is
built on this idea of different people
with different people with different
reasons for needing to come here which
makes me think in terms on the last
level of Gatsby isn't this his journey
now what is the irony whenever you
whenever whenever whenever you highlight
and annotate a poem the first thing you
want to do is always punk punch out the
youth the authors use of irony the whole
irony in this poem is that as a mother
of exiles Gatsby is about to be refused
isn't he he's going to be so mistreated
there's no statue of liberty for him so
you might point that out in another note
you might come back over here and you
might point out no statue of liberty for
Gatsby he doesn't belong and this is how
you annotate a poem the sunset gates
when I see that when i see that imagery
of a sunset and a gate that really makes
me think of these people who are born
with so much so much of what this book
what a welcoming place and so this is
really an irony for our novel isn't it
so we go through the poem and we really
look for places where we see
Gatsby Veblen and the American dream the
golden door hello we're going to call
that one a big-time piece of American
dream a big big time piece of American
Dream notion so with that I hope you now
understand how to annotate a poem when
you pick up I hear america singing do
the same thing I just did here good luck
